Jonathan Thacker

Jonathan Thacker is Fellow and Tutor in Spanish at Merton College, University of Oxford, and Doctor by the Emmanuel College of the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom). He is general editor of the bilingual series Aris and Phillips Hispanic Classics published by Oxbow Books.

As a member of the DICAT group, directed by Teresa Ferrer, he is currently working on the projects CATCOM. Las comedias y sus representantes. Base de datos de las comedias mencionadas en la documentación teatral (1540-1700) and Patrimonio teatral clásico español: textos e instrumentos de investigación, coordinated by Joan Oleza within the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 programme, both of which are funded by the Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación. He co-directs the project Out of the Wings funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and coordinated with the King's College of London and Queen's University of Belfast.

He is a specialist in Golden Age theatre and is especially interested in translation and staging. He has published articles on the theatre of Lope de Vega, Tirso de Molina, Calderón de la Barca, Guillén de Castro, and Miguel de Cervantes. He is the author of the study A Companion to Golden Age Theatre (2007) and has worked on the presence of meta-theatre in the Comedia Nueva in his book Role-Play and the World as Stage in the Comedia (2002). He has coordinated, together with Alexander Samson, the volume A Companion to Lope de Vega (2008), of which he also wrote several chapters. As a translator he has published a version of El condenado por desconfiado, by Tirso de Molina, together with Laurence Boswell (1992) and a translation of three of Cervantes Novelas ejemplares, together with Michael Thacker (1992).
